"A FRIEND IS ONE THAT COMES WHEN EVERYONE ELSE GOES.” |

I’m sure everyone here knows of JACKIE ROBINSON
the first Black to play baseball in the major leagues. Breaking
baseball’s color barrier, he faced hostile crowds in every
stadium.
If you really know the story about Jackie
Robinson you also know Pee Wee Reese (white short stop, captain of the Dodgers),
two moments in particular stand out between Reese and Robinson.
The first of the two incidents occurred at the beginning of spring
training in 1947, when Robinson had been called up to the Dodgers from Montreal,
Brooklyn's minor league team. A petition was drawn up by a group of mostly
Southern Dodgers players that stated they would not take the field with a black
man.
